A History of Britain – Revolutions
A History of Britain is a BBC documentary series written and presented by Simon Schama and features a study of the history of the British Isles, examining a particular period and tell of its events in his own style. The show spans a timeline from 3100 B.C. to the sixties of the 20th century.
This episode covers the years 1649–1689, a time of uncertainty and political and religious revolution. With the sudden removal of the monarchy with the execution of Charles I, the British people were worried about who would protect them from the newly founded professional army. The new republic, led by Oliver Cromwell, became so unpopular that by the end of the day Britain was to be ruled over once more by a monarch. Still, Cromwell was able to incorporate new reforms, ideas and visions.
