A History of Britain – The British Wars
A History of Britain is a BBC documentary series written and presented by Simon Schama and features a study of the history of the British Isles, examining a particular period and tell of its events in his own style. The show spans a timeline from 3100 B.C. to the sixties of the 20th century.
Episode 8 covers the years between 1603 and 1649. Even though England and Scotland were now joined, peace and union were nowhere to be seen. Civil war struck the country, tearing it apart and taking countless lives. With the war came famine and disease. Yet there were two good outcomes of this tragedy: The king being executed in public and the foundation of the republic of Great Britain, sporting a professional army, fueled by and ideology rather than fighting for one individual ruler.
