Inside Nature’s Giants Special – The Giant Squid

Inside Nature’s Giants dissects specimens of the largest animals found on earth in order to find out more about them. Conventional documentaries about animals show you their behaviour, but in this show we go right into the animals. The team firmly believes that the animal’s anatomy can reveal many secrets on the animal’s history, behaviour, way of life and answer questions and riddles which have not been solved yet.
For centuries, giant squids the size of entire ships were the stuff of legend. Seafarers would tell amazing stories about squids taking down entire ships to the depths of the ocean. In the late 19th century however, these legends turned out to be true – at least partially. A huge squid was washed up on New Zealand‘s shore, and even though live footage of these creatures does not exist they tend to occasionally get caught up in deep sea trawler’s fishing nets. In this Inside Nature’s Giants Special, we follow Joy Reidenberg and Mark Evans to New Zealand where they will be dissecting a specimen with a team of specialists. This proves to be a rare opprortunity for us to learn more about these huge creatures from the deep and understand how they live, eat and function.
