Firearms have come a long way, from the flintlock pistols over to the famous M16 used during the Vietnam War and modern conflicts. Manufacturers always sought to improve their weapons in terms of size, firepower, durability, but most of all rate of fire for an individual soldier. This goal was reached over a period of many centuries and saw its first success during the Second World War in the form of the sub machine gun. Since then, these weapons were further developed into assault rifles which combined the merits of both sub machine guns and traditional rifles into one extremely versatile and useful weapon.
